G4S Technology's experience with smart card applications for telecommunications systems as well as our background with smart card access systems worldwide provide us with a unique perspective and practical knowledge regarding the use of smart cards for physical access control.
G4S Technology offers two Smart Card encoding modules. The Contact Smart Card Programming enhancement module programs ISO 7819 contact chip smart cards. The contact programming module supports G4S Technology's own smartMAX® format as well as custom data formats, like SEIWG-012.
The Contactless Smart Card Programming enhancement module programs Mifare® cards and can use either G4S Technology's smartMAX or custom data formats. The contactless programming module can also manage the storage of biometric templates for use in a variety of biometric verification applications such as G4S Technology's S813 dual Mifare and fingerprint reader.
Biometrics are best defined as measurable physiological and / or behavioral characteristics that can be used to verify the identity of an individual. These include fingerprint, retinal and iris scanning, hand geometry, facial recognition and other techniques.
The value proposition for Biometric readers in access control is simple: a card can be duplicated or stolen, but a unique physiological characteristic cannot. Biometrics enable access control systems to ask not only, "What do you have?" and "What do you know?" but, "Who are you?"
As a result, biometrics are taking an increasingly prominent position as an additional access control solution in today’s escalating requirements for physical security.
